Data Residency Checker

Does Zoom Workplace (Meetings and AI Companion) keep data in Australia?

Some data can be kept in Australia. Paid Zoom accounts can store recordings and some content in Australia. Account data stays in the US unless the account is hosted on Zoom's Australian regional infrastructure (Enterprise or Education).

What Zoom Communications says

ClaimStatusVendor's wordsSourceLast checked
Storage at restPartly
All paid customers (including Pro) will be able to choose the storage location for some of their data for their account.

Note: Australia is one of the listed storage regions. The setting covers meeting and webinar cloud recordings, recording transcripts, in-meeting chat and files if the meeting is recorded, smart name tags, Whiteboard, and Zoom Phone and Contact Center recordings and messages. The same page says "Account data and operation data will continue to be stored in the US." Separately, Zoom Regional Infrastructure can house the whole account in Australia; its fact sheet says customers hosted there get "the ability to process and store data in-region", subject to exceptions (see exclusions).

Processing (incl. AI inference)Partly
For customers hosted in the EU or AU, Zoom uses ZM+ (or customers can choose ZMO) to support account data residency preferences for available features.

Note: Real-time meetings: paid admins can opt in or out of data centres (Sydney and Melbourne are listed), but the data centre support page says "Typically, new accounts are provisioned in the United States, meaning the United States data center cannot be disabled", and traffic may be edge-routed through opted-out data centres. AI Companion: accounts on the global (US) cluster use Zoom's federated approach, which Zoom says "Might involve global processing, including the US" and can send data to third-party models such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Only accounts hosted in Australia get ZM+ (Anthropic models on Amazon Bedrock under Zoom's control) or ZMO (Zoom-hosted models only). Some AI steps run in the US regardless: image moderation for AI virtual backgrounds ("Moderation occurs within AWS data centers in the US") and meeting-summary email delivery through Twilio SendGrid ("Twilio processes data in the US"). Contradiction: the AI whitepaper says ZM+ is "Currently available in the US, EU, AU", while Zoom's blog of 16 Oct 2025 lists ZM+ for US and EU only. The whitepaper is quoted as the more recent source.

Support accessNot in Australia
Support agents operate from multiple countries and utilize U.S.-based platforms for ticket management.

Note: This is listed as a Global Service Exception even for accounts hosted on Zoom Regional Infrastructure. The fact sheet says support access to recordings, chat history and whiteboards needs the organisation's approval and is time bounded. No Australia-only support option is published.

Plan requiredPaid option
Pro account or higher

Note: Choosing Australia as the content storage location needs a paid plan (Pro or higher); Free accounts cannot. Housing the whole account in Australia (Zoom Regional Infrastructure) is offered to "Education and Enterprise customers", per the regional infrastructure fact sheet, which also says "Not all products may be available." Pricing is not published; Zoom asks customers to contact their representative.

ExclusionsPartly
Account data and operation data will continue to be stored in the US.

Note: The storage setting does not move chat messages outside meetings, meeting and webinar polls, Q&A, call logs or workspace reservations; they stay in the region where the account is provisioned (typically the US). For accounts on Zoom Regional Infrastructure, the fact sheet lists Global Service Exceptions: safety and security review by U.S. Trust & Safety teams, support, billing, analytics, U.S.-based service notifications, U.S.-hosted global platform operations (Account ID, User ID, Meeting ID), and APIs and Marketplace apps that "may store and process data in the US". Meetings with external participants may be processed according to the other account's settings.

IRAP statusYes, in Australia
The objective of the independent Cloud Security Assessment was to assess how the security controls implemented at Zoom measure up against the Australian Cybersecurity Centre’s (ACSC’s) Information Security Manual and related standards for effective storage, processing, and communication of information up to the PROTECTED information classification level.

Note: The scope list includes Zoom Meetings, Zoom Webinars, Zoom Team Chat, Zoom AI Companion and AI Expert Assist, and AI Notetaker. The page does not give an assessment date; Zoom's blog announced the first IRAP assessment on 13 November 2022. The report itself (Zoom Trust Center, access on request) was not read, so the assessment date and ISM version are not confirmed.
